The Montessori Movable Alphabet is a hands-on tool designed to help children learn to read and write in a fun and engaging way. The physical form of the letters is important because it allows children to integrate touch and vision as they form words. This makes the learning experience more memorable and helps children retain the information.
Benefits of Montessori Movable Alphabet:
This is the first step in the Montessori writing-to-reading process. Children will begin by forming simple words with the letters and eventually progress to reading naturally. The hands-on approach and physical form of the letters make the learning experience engaging and memorable. Additionally, the green mat provides optimal contrast, making the letters easier to see and allowing children to focus on the task at hand.
To use the Movable Alphabet, you will need the following materials:
- A set of Movable Alphabet letters
- A partitioned box with a lid to display and store the letters
- A green mat for optimal contrast during the exercise
To present the Movable Alphabet, follow these steps:
- Invite your child to join you
- Unroll the green mat and bring the box of letters to the floor
- Review the Sandpaper Letters m, a, n, and c
- Take out the letter m and place it next to the Sandpaper Letter for m
- Introduce the letters a and n
- Form the word "man" with the three letters and sound it out
- Ask your child to sound it out
- Make new words by adding or changing letters
- Continue the exercise as long as your child is interested
- Clean up together or have the children do it themselves.
This hands-on tool helps to create a safe and supportive learning environment for children and allows them to grow and develop their skills at their own pace.
